Be patient
and take lessons. Tango is vastly more difficult than it appears and it will take at least a year to reach even a minimum
level of proficiency. Know that there will be times when you are very frustrated by the lack of progress in your dance but
just keep dancing. It will come. If you really want to progress faster, take private lessons. Groups are fun but privates
are where you will really learn the most.
The lady should never apologize for a misstep. If the lead is clear, she won’t make mistakes.
The lead is responsible for the smoothness of the dance and is responsible if anything goes wrong, even if the follower is
a new dancer.
Stay in the Line of Dance and don’t dance in the middle of the floor for any length of time. Dancing in middle
causes collisions and is nothing but problems for the in-line couples. It is very arrogant.
The lead should maintain
the couple’s place in line and not pass the couple in front unless they have stopped dancing.
Never look at you feet.
Make sure you can see a bit of the ceiling in your peripheral vision at all times. Looking down destroys your balance makes
every step more difficult.
Keep
your chest very still even in a peppy milonga. The lead comes from the chest and any unnecessary movement only confuses the
follower. By keeping your head up and chest out and still, the follower will have not problem sensing your leads.
Unless you are an instructor and your partner has asked specifically for your opinion, never criticize your partner
or offer an unsolicited lesson on the dance floor. This is the height of arrogance and a complete insult to your partner.
You can experiment and practice at a lesson or a practica but never at a milonga.
Look around the room and see who isn’t
being asked to dance and dance with them. The heart of Tango is open to all.
Above all - DANCE TO THE MUSIC!!
You don't have to take a step every beat and you can pause when ever you feel the music calls for it. This will fill
your dance with expression and really thrill the ladies!!
