Tango in Sacramento

Argentine Tango in the Sacramento area is vibrant and growing. By most estimates, it has doubled in sized in the last several years to over 200 active dancers with some Tango activity every evening, be it a Milonga or practica. We are especially fortunate in that most of the instructors in the Sacramento area are Argentine trained and there is an unending procession of accomplished Argentine celebrity instructors touring the city, insuring authentic and top quality instruction.

Tango By the River is the crown jewel of the Sacramento Tango scene. Located in the historic Old Sacramento riverfront district, this Argentine Tango dedicated Milonga studio offers lessons for all levels of Tango dancing and a wonderfully authentic Argentine Milonga on the second and fourth Saturday nights. We all thank our lucky stars for the dedication and hard work that Donna Williams has put into the studio to make it the premier Tango studio of Northern California.

Other milongas are held at restaurants and cafes throughout town each week and for the younger enthusiasts, Chris Peakes’s and Michelle Loughlin’s Downtown and Alternativa Milongas bring the latest in Nuevo Tango to Sacramento.

We all own a debt of appreciation to Ed Loomis, Michelle Loughlin, Peter Baldridge and Chris Peake for providing VERY dancable music and DJing at our dances and to Betsy Gorden and Joanne Miyao for hosting the “The Grind” and “Giovanni’s” milongas on Sunday evenings in North Natomas. We all look forward to "Jacque's Mirabelle Milonga” on the first, third and fifth Sundays at the Mirabelle’s European Café in Fair Oaks hosted by Luis 'El Suave' and his lovely wife Dee.

Most importantly, the Argentine Tango community is strongly united to the dance itself and not to personalities. All are welcomed and new ideas are encouraged. And to this end, no discussion on Tango in Sacramento is complete without thanking Ed Loomis for his tireless effort to promote Tango here. His news letter keeps everyone informed of the latest events and offers a platform for discussing current controversies. We’re one big happy dysfunctional family!
